First tandem session

1 November 2009

The tandem concept works really well. The Goethe Institut recommends a set of ground rules, which we completely ignored. The good thing about this was that the flow of the conversation was spontaneous most of the time and that we could choose French or German from moment to moment according to what served us best. The disadvantage was that we probably spent too much time noting things down and correcting one another’s notes. The main challenge for me is talking — I have reasonable knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, but stringing together phrases and sentences is what I need to practice. It turned out that Michel’s passive knowledge of German similarly exceeds his active talking capability. We’ll meet again on Friday — I am looking forward to it and I’m sure it’ll get even better.
